Best Surge Protector Buying Guide – Top 10 Brands Reviewed 2019

Last Updated on

When it comes to power surges, you can never be too careful. Some people dismiss power surges because they’ve never been affected by one. These people, if they do anything at all, will usually just settle for cheap power strips they find at their local electronics store. It is always after a damaging power surge occurred, with their expensive electronics fried and ruined, that they wish they had invested in the best surge protector that fit their budget and electrical needs.

Don’t let this happen to you. Instead, opt for a decent surge protector based on your current needs, budget and environment (more on that later). You’ll see the money spent was worth it the next time you experience a nasty and disastrous power surge, tripped circuit breaker or unexpected power outages and yet nothing happens to your treasured electronic devices.

Editorial Top Pick

APC 11-Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip with USB Charging Ports, 2880 Joules, SurgeArrest Home/Office (P11U2) We choose APC P11U2 as our best editorial pick mainly because of its very modest pricing vs the many excellent features that are built into it. It’s dual smart charging 2.4 amp USB ports are definitely a BIG plus in our book. Did you know that it also comes with catastrophic event protection a.k.a fail-safe mode?

Fail-safe mode prevents excessive power currents from lightning strikes and irregular current spikes from reaching and causing damage to connected electrical devices and appliances even if the surge protection ability has been compromised.

Best Surge Protector Buying Guide for Your Home and Office

===
When you shop around for surge protection devices, you’re quickly going to notice that there are many brands and models out there to choose from. The problem is that they all claimed to be the best. They either advertise that they have the best price, or that their surge suppressors offer the widest range of surge protection for electrical appliances. However, you can’t just go by what the company claims as it is pretty obvious they’re going to say their company produces the best surge protection devices in the market.

Do note that buying expensive brands or models may not necessarily means better protection against nasty power surges. Some lower price surge protection models may actually offer more comprehensive surge protection than their costlier competitors.

Be sure to make use of the 10 buying tips and selection criteria below when shopping for surge protectors that will provide the best surge protection for your electrical possessions:

1. Environment

The environment we live in play a big part in the type of surge suppressors we should invest in. People living in area/cities prone to erratic voltages should obviously invest in a more robust surge protection system for their home or office. Do you live in an area prone to lightning strikes? If so, then using both whole-house surge protection devices (Type 1 or 2) and point-of-use (Type 3) a.k.a surge protection strips is definitely a better option for you.

2. Budget Consideration

If budget is not an issue for you, it is always recommended to invest in a decent quality surge protection device (more on the surge protector choosing criteria later) if you own expensive and high-end electrical appliances and devices at home.

If budget is tight, make sure to check what is the minimum surge protection coverage (hint: look for surge protection devices with surge suppression rating of 400 joules and above) for the type of devices and appliances that you wish to protect at home or in the office. Doing so will make sure you do not spend more than what you actually need to get the required surge protection coverage for your home appliances and office devices.

3. Consider the Type of Appliances or Devices that Require Surge Protection

Next, I would recommend listing down all the electrical appliances, devices that require surge protection at home or in the office. Doing this will give you an idea on the level of surge protection your surge protector should possess and the number of power outlets it should have. If you have USB charging devices like speakers, power banks and mobile phones, you should probably get one that comes with multiple USB outlets.

4. UL Seal Certification

This is important. Always get surge protector that comes with a UL seal and is certified by Underwriter’s Laboratories which is now the industrial standard.

5. High Joules Absorption Rating

If you have high-end electrical appliances like home entertainment systems at home, you would definitely want to go for surge protection devices that come with high Joules absorption rating because they are the last line of defense against nasty power spikes before your electrical equipment get hit. Check out the selection criteria section below on exactly how much joule rating to get for a power surge suppressor.

6. Low Clamping Voltage/Let-through Rating

Clamping Voltage is the maximum amount of voltage that are allowed to pass through the surge protector. If the maximum amount is exceeded, the surge protector “wakes up“and  start protecting all the plugged-in devices by blocking off the excess voltage currents. Anything that is 350V and lower range should be good to go but bear in mind they are also relatively more expensive. Hence be sure to check the clamping voltage of the surge protection device you are planning to buy.

7. Lowering of Electrical Bill

If your electrical bills are always on the high side, it is probably time to look out for a surge protection strip that is Eco-friendly. Most energy-saving surge protectors come with a Master Control switch which will shut off power to all other outlet on the strip resulting in the elimination of phantom loads. Energy efficient surge protection devices definitely have the potential to land you a smaller electrical bill.

8. Fail-Safe Mode – Power Shut Down Protection

Surge protection devices that come with Fail-Safe mode will shut off the power to all its outlets when it is no longer able to provide protection against power spikes and surges. This may not be a viable option for people who has electrical and network appliances that need to be “Always On” 24 x 7.

But if your connected devices are non-mission critical, this is definitely a good safety feature to have in a good surge protector.

9. Diagnostic Notification LEDs

The two most commonly diagnostic LEDs are ground indicator and surge protection status lights. With these notification LEDs, we are able to check on the status of our surge protection devices at a single glance.

For example, diagnostic lights like ground indicator light can help determine whether connected devices are properly wired and grounded or not. There is zero power surge protection if the device is not properly grounded. And if you notice the protection mode LED is off, it means the surge protector has wore out its protection capability and you should replace a new one soonest.

10. Warranty Period and Claim Amount

Besides checking the warranty period, it is definitely a good practice to check and understand the terms and conditions from the surge protector manufacturers (often in super small print) on how the claim can be awarded to you should the surge protector you bought failed to do its job.

Surge Protector Selection Criteria and Considerations

===
Below is a few basic criteria and considerations that we usually advise our clients before they get surge protection devices for their home and offices. They are basically just a good guideline to have and depending on your environment, personal requirements and needs, your selection criteria may varies.

Joules Absorption Rating – this is essentially the amount of excess voltage power a surge protection device can absorb while shielding all your connected electrical devices from the harmful effects of power spikes and surges. Each time power surges come about, it will take a hit on its lifespan (joules depletion). Depending on how much joules absorption rating your surge protector comes with, these joules inside the surge protection device will eventually deplete away completely, rendering the surge protector useless.

We recommended getting at least surge protection devices that come with at least 2400 joules and above if you have a lot of plug-in electronic and electrical devices.

Clamping Voltage – think of clamping voltage as the amount of power voltages a surge protector can let in to the connected devices before it clamps down on the incoming voltage and start diverting the over-voltages away. We always recommend our clients to get surge protection devices that come with clamping voltage of 350 and below. We understand that surge protector that comes with low clamping voltages are typically not cheap. If you are on a budget, you should at least settle for a clamping voltage of 400 and below.

Response Time – Most surge protection brands we know of have response time of around 1 nanosecond and below which is fine in our opinion. The faster the surge protector jumped into action in shielding your prized electrical possessions and diverting those excessive currents to ground, the higher the survival rate of your electrical components.

Miswiring of Electrical Outlets – before getting a (or new) surge protection device for your home, we would highly Socket Tester GFCI Outlet Tester 48-250V Automatic Electric Power Circuit Polarity Voltage Detector Wall Plug Breaker Finder Leakage Test With LED voltage display TA106Brecommend that you check the electrical outlets of your house. Sometimes due to miswiring of the electrical outlets, even having the best surge protector will not help protect your connected electrical devices out of the harm’s way. For that we would recommend getting an electrical outlet tester, conduct a quick and easy test and hopefully flush out all the faulty and miswired outlets. Improperly wired outlet is usually an easy fix by a certified electrician.

When you finally get your ideal surge protection system, and you plug it into your home’s outlet, you’ll have a peace of mind knowing that anything you plug into it will be kept safe from even the strongest of power surges and fluctuations. Especially if you get a tough brand like the Tripp Lite surge protectors, you’ll feel extra safe.

Two Common Misconceptions

Surge Protector vs Power Strip

Before we delve into the standard criteria for choosing the best surge protection devices for your home, let’s take a moment to correct a common misconception between a normal power strip and surge protector.

Some home owners have the wrong impression that ALL power strips come with built-in surge protection capabilities. That is NOT TRUE! Power strips are usually just a power extension bar which helps split your A/C wall outlet into many more outlet, they will do nothing to protect your connected electrical devices from harmful effects of a strong power spikes and fluctuations from a nearby faulty electrical grid.

On the other hand, surge protection devices protect and shield all connected devices from electrical anomalies like power fluctuations, power surges, transients, voltage spikes and so on. They will take the hit (incoming power surge) on behalf of all the plugged in electrical devices when a deadly power spike comes through the AC outlet. These surge protection devices will divert all excessive power voltage to ground while shielding connected devices from devastating effects of electrical voltages.

Hence before you go grab a surge protection power strip off the shelves, do make sure that the power strip you have chosen offers surge protection capabilities and if possible, are inline with the selection criteria we have put together further below.

Does Surge Protector Shield Against Lightning Strikes?

Unfortunately, the answer is NO. Having the best possible surge protection devices at home or in the office does not ALWAYS provide absolute protection against lightning strikes. There are obviously exceptions to such claims.

The amount of electrical voltages from a lightning strike that stuck a nearby power grid is very likely to fry up all electrical appliances and devices in your house including surge protection devices. No amount of joules absorption rating from a point-of-use surge protector is able to withstand the sheer power surge from a nearby or direct lightning strike. Fortunately such occurrence are pretty rare and most of the time, the lightning strike occurs quite a far distance away and if you have a decent surge protection devices at home, your electrical assets should all be safe and sound. 🙂

Like we mentioned earlier, if you stay in or nearby a lightning-prone area, it is highly recommended that you invest in a Type 1 or Type 2 whole house surge protection devices. Both Type 1 (installed between power utility pole and main service panel of your house) and Type 2 (installed at main power circuit panel inside your house) whole-house surge protectors are your first and second lines of defense against the incoming voltages from a lightning bolt which may occur a fair distant away.

They are more expensive than Type 3 (point-of-use) surge protectors which are the last line of defense before the power surge hits your plug-in electrical devices. Eaton CHSPT2ULTRA , Square D HEPD80 and FS140 Siemens are 3 of the many leading brands of whole house surge protection devices that are trustworthy and widely used in most home and offices.

In the most ideal situation, both Type 2 and Type 3 surge protection devices should be used together inside your home or office.

Best Price Doesn’t Means Best Deal
