Tom could not believe his good luck. He got an entire apartment of his own for only a few hundred bucks a month.
It was a steal.
Although it was located inside an old building, the rental was too cheap for Tom to give it a second thought.
He soon bought a new home theater entertainment set and invited a group of colleagues to his new place.
Everything went well until he decided to play a movie – to show off his newly purchased home entertainment system.
The lights in his apartment flicker the moment he turned on the audio systems…
The movie started.
It was a great movie but Tom was utterly embarrassed. Both the audio and video quality suck.
Once in a while, audio buzzing noise could be heard and video hum-bars could be seen across his 60 inches OLED TV screen.
*Face-palmed* 🤦♂️
Tom checked the DVD and nothing was wrong.
He powered on and off the entertainment system multiple times.
No improvements.
After parting with his colleagues with nothing short of sheer embarrassments, he returned the home theater entertainment set to the shop he bought from the following day.
The shop technician tested the set in front of Tom. Both the audio and visual quality were great playing the same DVD movie.
Tom was confused.
After a short verbal exchange and deductions, they nailed the root cause.
The old building.
The AC outlets and wiring of old buildings usually suffer from frequent power fluctuations and interference.
The shop tech told Tom that a power conditioner should help him out.
He recommended one of the many models of power line conditioners in his shop.
After some bargaining and demonstrations on how it works, Tom bought one and went back home.
Two hours later…
Tom was a happy man.
He played the same movie once again. Both the audio and image quality was superb after the direct power from the AC outlet was filtered and stabilized.
In Tom’s opinion, the few hundred dollars were well spent. 🙂

Furman PL-PRO C is our best editorial pick among many other power conditioners based on its superior protection, outstanding performance and features.
Furman is truly the undisputed industry leader when it comes to AC power conditioning and protection. It has been a renowned and trusted brand for audio and visual professionals for more than 40 years.
Many mission-critical events have been hosted using Furman’s best-in-class products and they have proven to deliver clean, stable and protected power consistently regardless of the environment and circumstances.
And most importantly, it is reasonably priced. 🤑
With E.V.S, SMP and LiFT power protection and filtering capabilities all packed in, it is truly a worthy power conditioning device to be had based on its current price point.
Beyond its sleek exterior, I personally like the 20-segment tricolor voltage meter bar which allows you to monitor the incoming AC voltages that are going into your costly AV equipment.
If you are an AV professional constantly on the go, you will come to appreciate the USB charging port that comes with PL-PRO C.
What I truly like about PL-PRO C is that it offers two isolated banks of outlets that allow interference to be isolated between analog and digital AV equipment.
To top it off, PL-PRO C is one of the few Furman power conditioners that offers 5 years of limited warranty.
Peace of mind for 5 years – truly a model worth trying out. 😉

Buying Guide for Power Conditioners
Ready to power up your all-new home entertainment systems that you have spent thousands of dollars on?
Not quite.
Contrary to what most people believe, NOT all power lines are ‘clean’. Those raw and non-regulated power sources from your home or office could cause untold damage to your costly AV equipment.
Old buildings in some areas may have dirty power lines that could drastically reduce the quality of your audio and video output with electromagnetic interference and more. Not to mention nasty power spikes that may fry your AV equipment in a split second.
Before you rush online and spent some pretty pennies on what you deem as the best power conditioner, be sure to read the buying guide I have prepared for you below. 📑
Things to Consider Before Getting One
Budget
This may be obvious to some people but often times I do hear clients mentioning to me that they over-spent on their home appliances and ended up having to get installment loans (with interests) for other home essentials. 🙄 Do plan out your budget prior to getting one.
Features and Functions (a.k.a Bells and Whistles)
Thanks to the many creative marketing ads these days, many people (including myself) have often been enticed by the latest features and technology and end up paying for functions and features that we do not really need. 🙁 Unless you have a spare budget to splurge, be sure to get a power line conditioner that best suits your requirements (office AV equipment, home theater or musical gigs etc) so that you will not pay for features that you may NEVER use.
Number of Outlets
This is one area in which you will have to decide depending on the number of connected AV equipment you plan to have now or in the near future.
Rack-mount Capability
Again, this is something you will have to consider before getting your ideal brand and model of the power conditioner.
Environment
If you are already staying inside an old building or area with frequent power disturbances and power grid disruptions, you should get a power line conditioner to safeguard your home theater and AV equipment as soon as you can.
And if you are planning to move into an area with old buildings, I would strongly suggest that you check out the area to make sure there are no serious power line problems waiting to damage your prized AV equipment.
If you can avoid moving into an old building or area with power line issues, you will NOT need to get a power conditioner that comes with a whole lot of features and functions.
Essential Features to Have
Wall Wart Spacing Indicator
This is one important factor you will have to consider while picking the best line conditioners to protect your home theaters and other AV equipment. Some old AV equipment may come with a big-sized plug that will take up twice the space of a single outlet.
Master On/Off Switch
Make sure to pick one with a master switch if you want convenience and a need to trim down your monthly electrical bill. Switch off all equipment when NOT in use will help you save some cash. Do not waste it on phantom loads.
RFI/EMI Noise Filtration
This is probably the bare minimum feature you should have when getting a power conditioner. Once electrical interference is filtered away, you will definitely enjoy the better sound and visual quality of your home theater system.
Warranty
All power line conditioners should come with a warranty and perhaps some sort of connected equipment insurance policy. Be sure to read and understand the warranty terms and conditions before swiping that credit card of yours. 😉
Good to Have Features and Functions
Below is a list of features and functions that you MAY need depending on your individual situation and requirements. Never get a power line conditioner with features that you may never use.
Ultrasonic Filtration outlets
Cable Satellite and Telco connection ports
SMP (Series Multi-Stage Protection)
LiFT (Linear Filtering Technology)
E.V.S (Extreme Voltage Shutdown)
Front panel Voltmeter and Current meter display
Power Sequencing
Front Panel Retractable LED Lamp
With all the technical jargon and specifications, it can be really daunting when shopping to get the best power conditioner that suits your needs for the first time. But once you have considered your requirements and budget, choosing the best line conditioner for your home theater setup should be a walk in the park.
Most online retailers will always tout that they have the best power conditioners – be sure to always read up some reviews and make decisions based on your needs and not wants.
If you are still feeling confused and helpless after reading this buying guide, try sticking to tried and trusted brands like Panamax or Furman.

1Panamax MR4300 Power Conditioner
It is very hard to take your eyes off Panamax MR4300 once you glaze upon its futuristic exterior that adds a neat, quiet and subtle charm to its overall build and design.
Besides having an attractive design, I ought to mention that Panamax is the industry leader when it comes to having exclusive technologies that provide electrical protection, filtration, and power monitoring.
As mentioned in my full review of MR4300, Automatic Voltage Monitoring (AVM) and Protect or Disconnect™ Technology are the 2 features that make MR4300 stand out.
Power irregularities like under-voltage (brownout) or over-voltage (power spike) will have no chance to get through to your AV components with the patented AVM technology in place. The moment these current fluctuations are detected, the power source will be shut off and will be automatically restored when the safe level of power voltage resumes.
When MR4300 detects extremely strong voltage spikes (lightning) that are beyond its ability to shield, the Protect or Disconnect™ Technology will kick in almost instantaneously and permanently cut off the AC power source to all connected AV equipment. This will ensure your prized AV components remain safe and intact.
If you like me who prefer a digital display of incoming voltages, you will be glad that this power conditioner for home theater comes with a Digital Volt Meter besides having a media light control button and a USB charger at the front panel.
With so many smart features and technology in place, Panamax MR4300 is definitely a good investment when it comes to having great peace of mind (lifetime product warranty) whenever a lightning storm comes around.

7iFi Power Station Surge Protection Power Conditioner
At first glance, iFi Power Station may look simplistically plain and unworthy of the high dollar it is asking for. Yet, hidden within it beholds technologies that would greatly enhance the quality of your incoming AC power source.
What makes iFi Power Station different from its competitors is that every outlet comes with its own isolated chamber and is constructed with Purcopper for superior conductivity.
Active Noise Cancellation is iFi’s proprietary performance-enhancing technology that came with iFi Power Station. This superior technology helps achieve a far more comprehensive termination of noise across the frequency spectrum – something that could only be matched by very high-end AV equipment.
As most power conditioners offer passive noise reduction via a range of filters and regulators, they do suffer from certain inherent disadvantages. As for iFi Power Station, its Active Noise Cancellation technology uses inverse noise current to cancel out noise in the main signal. This obviously means that you will get to experience and enjoy a much more superior audio and video quality.
Whether you have an expensive home theater entertainment system at home or a mission-critical AV set up at your workplace, iFi Power Station is most effective when it is used with modern audio systems that come with a huge varieties of digital and analog components.
What truly impresses me is that iFi Power Station comes equipped with an AC Purifier which can be inserted back to the main housing when it is not in use. This AC Purifier further enhances the noise-busting capabilities of the Power Station by separating digital and analog components and reducing cross-contamination. Plug any analog AV equipment into the AC purifier and you will have instantly isolated the possibilities of any cross-contamination. How cool is that? 🙂
In case you are wondering, additional AC purifiers can be purchased separately here.
iFi Power Station may seem expensive but if you are someone who truly appreciates high Audio/Video quality in your line of work and requires superior protection from unfiltered power lines, the asking price is obviously justifiable. 😉

8Furman M-8S Power Conditioner
Have you ever experienced “Speaker Pop” when you fire up your AV components? Yes?
Well, you are NOT alone.
Most A/V professionals do experience some form of equipment damage while the devices are been powered up or down.
“Speaker Pop” is the loud popping noise that occurs when AV equipment is powered up simultaneously or out of sequence. In the long run, “Speaker Pop” will cause stress damage to the sound system components such as amplifiers and speakers.
Power sequencing is probably the most well-known to help eliminate “Speaker Pop”. If you are looking to get rid of this loud popping noise whenever you power up your A/V equipment, you will want to check out the Furman M-8S power conditioner.
Power sequencing allows your prized AV equipment to be powered up in stages which gives equipment sufficient time to stabilize before the next set of equipment is powered up.
When powering down, the sequence order is reversed which will provide a “soft landing” for your expensive AV equipment.
Besides having Power Sequencing capability, Furman M-8S also features a Merit Line to Neutral surge protection as well as RFI/EMI filtration.
The Merit filter helps to dissipate voltage transients and protect your equipment from damaging power spikes.
I personally love the fact that the front panel has Power Sequence Delay indicator lights (see image above) to help you visualize the delay sequence (see image below) when you plug your AV equipment into their 6 respective delay outlets ( 2 in each delay group) at the rear panel.
There are also 2 “UnSwitched” outlets at the rear panel and 1 at the front panel for devices that do not need power sequencing.
This 9 outlet power conditioner also comes with a Sequencing On/Off switch at the front panel to help you power On or Off the “Delay 1, 2 and 3 Outlets” at the rear panel.
In case you are wondering, the power sequencing delay interval can be adjusted.
It is factory preset to approximately 5 seconds and it is possible to length or shorten the delay interval.
All in all, Furman M-8S is definitely worth the investment if you own professional or commercial audio systems that require power sequencing capabilities.
